The Effect of Group Art Therapy on the Adaptive Behavior of Students with Intellectual Disabilities

|
This study was to examine the influence of group art therapy on the adaptive behaviors of students with intellectual disabilities. The subjects in this study were 12 selected high school boys and girls with intellectual disabilities who resided in the province of J. In order to find the effects of group art therapy on the adaptive behaviors of the students with intellectual disabilities, their adaptive behaviors were tested in advance. And then, group art therapy was provided for them in 20 sessions, twice a week. After this therapy was offered, a posttest was conducted in the same way as the pretest to see if there would be any changes in their adaptive behaviors. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the group art therapy had an effective on the personal adaptive behaviors of the students with intellectual disabilities. When the subfactors of their personal adaptive behaviors were analyzed, there was a significant effect in habits and manner, and no significant change was found in utterance vocal habit. Next, group art therapy was effective at improving the social adaptive behaviors of the students with intellectual disabilities as well. When the subfactors of their social adaptive behaviors were analyzed, they made a significant effect in untrustworthy, stereotyped behavior, self abusive. In contrast, there were no significant changes in aggressive behavior, antisocial behavior, oppositional behavior and atrophy behavior. The findings of the study suggest that the group art therapy could be used as a way to bolster the adaptive behaviors of students with intellectual disabilities.
